Preservation involves actions and procedures to keep data for some period of time and includes data archiving or submission to a data repository.

WesScholar institutional repository for Wesleyan University, and was established with the goal of capturing, permanently preserving, and distributing materials of institutional and historical value to the University. It is a suite of services and platforms that enable Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff to store and share their research data and other scholarly and creative outputs in digital format.

Backup Archive Repository

Backup - creating backups of collected data is critically important as they protect against human error, hardware failure, and natural disasters. Make sure to backup the metadata as well. Place the backup in a different location from the original data source. CD is NOT recommended.

Archive - governmental differentiation 

Repository - a centralized place to store and maintain data, often managed by data curation personnel who ensure that files are managed and preserved for the long-term. They help make data more discoverable for reuse.
