Finding Site Reports

Site reports of excavations are an important resource for archaeologists, but can be tricky to find since they can be published in a variety of formats and places (books, articles, dissertations, field notes and reports, etc.), and many are not published because they contain sensitive site location information.

To find site reports in a database (such as OneSearch), use search terms such as

  • excavation
  • antiquities
  • archaeology
  • report
  • site
  • historical

along with terms to describe your topic of interest such as

  • geographic locations (country, state or province, city, region, place)
  • group of people (nation, tribe, ethnic group)
  • type of site (cave, mound, tomb, village, house)

Also, you can find books or articles about your topic of interest and look in their bibliographies for citations to site reports.

Many unpublished site reports are held by state archaeologist offices, historical commissions, or other repositories, and can be accessed via special request.
