ChatGTP Detectors

Several available tools purport to detect whether something has been generated by ChatGPT. However, they can generate many false negatives and positives and are therefore not particularly reliable, in addition to various other concerns. For example, they have a tendency to flag writing by non-native English speakers/writers as being artificially generated. Further, it is good to be cautious about uploading students' work into one of these detectors, as they then have a copy of the students' work in their database. In addition to those issues, there are a growing number of subscription-based AI generators and other applications designed to bypass AI detection.

So, rather than rely on an AI detection tool, the best way to avoid student misuse of AI is likely to have a clear AI policy and discuss it at the beginning of the semester.
