Many funders require the outputs of research to be made freely available, and typically allow grant money to be budgeted for APCs. Some private foundations will cover APCs only for journals that conform to certain open access standards, such as being fully OA rather than hybrid (for example, see "Costs we'll provide" from the Wellcome Trust).
General guidelines for a few major US government funders are listed below. A librarian or member of the Office of Corporate, Foundation and Government Grants can help you locate more detailed policies and policies for other funders. The Grants Office will also assist you in correctly budgeting for publications in your grant application.
Remember that depositing a version of your article in a disciplinary or institutional repository is a free, easy, and reliable way to make your work available to anyone with an internet connection that is endorsed by open access advocates and meets funder requirements.

Wesleyan faculty may use any funds in their '0' and '1' smartkeys to pay publication fees. Grants in support of scholarship can be specifically requested to cover APCs.
The following table lists fees charged to publish articles open access in some of the journals where Wesleyan authors have historically published most often, across a range of disciplines. This sample is not intended to be fully representative or comprehensive, but can provide an idea of how much you should budget if you wish to publish open access via a fee model. If you are having trouble finding information about open access publishing or APCs for a journal not listed here, please reach out to a librarian using the information in the sidebar.
Some journals popular among Wesleyan authors are not listed here because they are diamond open access (no cost to read or publish) -- for instance, Cultural Anthropology. Others are subscription journals with no open access publishing options at the time of this writing, such as American Quarterly and Modern Fiction Studies.
As you explore open access publishing, remember that there are several good no-cost options for publishing open access, including submitting your manuscript to a repository ("green open access") alongside publishing in a paywalled journal, selecting a diamond open access journal with no fees to publish, or taking advantage of one of the library's read & publish agreements. More information about these options is available here.
