Funder Requirements for Open Access to Research Outputs

Many funders require the open dissemination of products of funded research, such as articles and data. The resources below will help you locate up to date information about specific funder requirements. A librarian or member of the Office of Corporate, Foundation and Government Grants can help you locate and understand policies if you are unsure.

Funding agencies that require research to be published open access generally allow publishing costs to be paid for from the grant budget, or will provide supplementary funds. See Covering Open Access Costs for more information and to check how much you should budget for.

Upcoming changes to sharing requirements for federally funded science research

  • In August 2022 the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy released a memo stating that all federally funded research must be made immediately available to the public in the future. This is in contrast to current policies which allow research to remain permanently or temporarily behind a paywall. More information will be forthcoming from specific agencies, which have until 2025 to implement the memo.
