Research in African American Studies

African American Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of people of African descent in the Black Atlantic world, especially in the United States and in the Caribbean.

Depending on your topic, resources may come from a variety of places.

  • Secondary literature/Peer reviewed journal articles - typically provide either a detailed critique of a narrow, focused topic or question; or a short summary of a broader idea
  • Books - offer extended original presentations of, or critical analyses on a topic
  • Primary Sources - direct, uninterpreted records of the subject of your research project
  • LibGuides for other disciplines
  • Websites -  can enhance your knowledge providing you look at them through a critical eye understanding the reason for their existence.
