Founded in tandem with the creation of the Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies in 1987, this is a collection of artworks and archives from across East Asia, with a strong emphasis on 19th-century China. The collection includes textiles, paintings, sculpture, calligraphy, and furniture, and other historical objects. The archival collection includes documents and historical photographs mostly relating to interaction between China and the West during the 19th and 20th centuries. Of particular note are archives relating to the First Chinese Educational Mission in the U.S. (1872-1881) and more than 50 Cultural Revolution posters from China.
