Library GenAI Support Policy

The Library facilitates the fundamental value of access to trustworthy information for the Wesleyan community. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can accelerate access to information and advance efficiency in research results. However, AI also has the potential to disrupt information landscapes and the communities that researchers and libraries support by producing and perpetuating inaccurate or biased results, exposing sensitive data, and causing harmful environmental effects. Indeed, the increasing, albeit inequitable, availability of AI models raises significant ethical considerations. For these reasons, the Library is committed to helping students understand the value of sources and the research process, ensuring they are equipped to critically evaluate and utilize AI tools responsibly. However, we will not focus on teaching specific AI tools unless they are recognized as significantly enhancing research and are equitably accessible to all students. We are unable to entertain faculty requests for specific AI tool instruction but are open to discussing scenarios in which AI tools may be relevant and useful. Ethical considerations will guide our teaching practices, and we will engage in discussions with faculty if requests involve potential ethical conflicts with existing AI integration.
