ChatGPT and other Generative AI

What Is Generative AI?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that employs machine learning algorithms to recognize patterns and formulate output, such as text, images, music, or videos, based on prompts input by the user. These algorithms run on vast amounts of training data to create machine learning models, such as large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. Generative AI can be used in innumerable ways from content creation to problem solving.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is, according to ChatGPT itself, “a computer program created by OpenAI that can understand and generate text like a human. It has been trained on a huge amount of text, so it can respond to questions and have conversations in a way that sounds natural. For example, if you ask ChatGPT a question, it will use what it has learned to generate a response that makes sense and is relevant to your question. This can make it easier and more enjoyable for people to communicate with technology.”

What it does not admit in that description is that the huge amount of text it has been trained on includes a lot of unreliable sources from the open Internet, so while its responses may sound authentic, they are not necessarily accurate or exhaustive.
